Ricardo Reyes: Turning Lessons Into Purpose
Ricardo Reyes is a non-traditional student whose path to higher education has been anything but ordinary. As a young adult, Ricardo faced significant challenges that ultimately led to his incarceration. During that time, he witnessed firsthand how the justice system treats inmates—and made a commitment to change his life for the better.
Through deep self-reflection, Ricardo found purpose in education. In his published article, “Lessons Learned in Prison,” he wrote:
“To those who say that educating our prisoners isn’t helping curb their appetite for their own destruction, I would advise you to read about David Carrillo on Chalkbeat Colorado.”
Ricardo takes pride in those who came before him—incarcerated individuals who transformed their lives through education. Inspired by their journeys, he, too, dedicated himself to learning after his release.
Today, with the support of the Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation (PHEF), Ricardo is back in school and continuing his journey of self-growth. He credits his professors, advisor, and the TRIO program for providing the guidance and encouragement he needs to stay focused, grounded, and driven.
In addition to academics, Ricardo has found renewed strength and discipline through boxing—a personal outlet that complements his academic resilience.

Ricardo’s message to others is clear and empowering:
“Help is out there—you just have to start looking. I can dream for myself, for my city, and most of all, for my children. That’s the biggest difference for me.”
Seventeen years after incarceration, Ricardo Reyes stands as a powerful example of perseverance, faith, and the transformative power of education.
